Agree to disagree

I'm Scared
You're Bold
You're Warm
I'm Cold
Let's see where we can meet
I'm Blue
You're Gold
You're New
I'm Old
Let's see where we can meet
You're You
I'm Me
Let's Agree
To Disagree
And see where we can meet

Fairytale
03:57
|
|||
Slowly
She peers out through the window
Watches daily life from limbo
Wonders how her love has let go
Quickly
How her dream became a nightmare
Every night no-one to wake her
as she whispers one more lost prayer
Like a princess without a fairytale
the knight who lost the holy grail
the hunter who gave up on the trail
She's lost
Walking
Down the aisle was the moment
with words of beauty and of consent
Wonders where those feelings went
Running
just to stand still while treading water
She was her father's favourite daughter
She was not meant to be this way
Like a princess without a fairytale
the knight who lost the holy grail
the hunter who gave up on the trail
She's lost
In this land of make-believe
Where wishes flow like wine
The handsome prince's words deceived
The princess once was mine
In this land of fairytale
She hears the sound of laughter
It's someone else's story now
Someone else's ever after
Like a princess without a fairytale
the knight who lost the holy grail
the hunter who gave up on the trail
She's lost

Long road home
03:01
|
|||
I've been clearing the minefield
for the long road home
Boxing the troubles
in plastic and bubbles
Setting the temperature low
Wrapping up well for the snow
I've been hearing my story
on the jungle drums
Everyone wiser
is now my advisor
Telling me what I should do
When all that I needed was you
I could write you some letters it's words that I lack
I could be so much better if you'd only take me back
I could sing below the balcony
I could bring the seeds of harmony
for you and you alone
on the long road home
I've been fearing the moment
now we finally meet
feeling fainthearted
now the party has started
Leaving my gift at the door
The sailor's coming ashore
I could write you some letters it's words that I'm missing
I could be so much better if it was you I was kissing
I could sing below the balcony
bring the seeds of harmony
for you and you alone
on the long road home

The actor
03:18
|
|||
The actor reads from autocue
The words come hollow and untrue
The crowd are one and all subdued
Well fed on media reviews
The actor savours every line
He spits out hatred by design
The crowd responding yet resigned
The bit part players never shine
Performing birds in a gilded cage
The actor manufactures rage
Another day, another stage
The actor gives another twist
His knife has hardly ever missed
Your name is on a waiting list
And then one day you don't exist
The actor like a bird of prey
detects the scent of your decay
The curtain call has come your way
This is the last line of your play
The crowd file out one by one
The actor plays with a smoking gun
One more phoney war begun

Cowboys never cry
02:57
|
|||
Show her a good time
make her think she's number one
treat her nicely
until the deed is done
Dressed to kill
Carry your gun to the poker game
Just lie still
They don't need to know your name
Cowboys never cry
They only ride off in the sunset and they're gone
They don't know why
But the cowboy carries on
You wear a uniform
though you said you never could
Secret handshakes
though you said you never would
Dressed to kill
Carry your gun to the poker game
Just lie still
They don't need to know your name
Cowboys never cry
They only ride off in the sunset and they're gone
They don't know why
But the cowboy carries on
Stuck in a movie
you once saw on TV
Living-room heroes
from the 1970's
Now the doctor's here
it's just a waiting game
Just lie still
They don't need to know your name
Cowboys never cry
They only ride off in the sunset and they're gone
They don't know why
But the cowboy carries on

Mary opens the long-locked door
and takes a look outside
shuffles past the family pet
and kicks the cans aside
She takes a left turn on her way
to get what she's been given
she waits in line to grab her share
of modern urban living
Mary hurries along the road
her next appointment waiting
they know her at the corner shop
they know her thirst needs slaking
Doesn't look beyond the faded picture on the wall
Couldn't care the phone is broke
'Cos no-one ever calls
Back in her home she sits alone
with daytime soaps and drinking
she waits until the dreams arrive
and drowns in wishful thinking
She's the queen of wishful thinking
Doesn't look beyond the faded picture on the wall
Couldn't care the phone is broke
'Cos no-one ever calls

My cold shoulder
03:08
|
|||
With Helen I was cold
Trying hard to stay controlled
Wary of the helping hand
Scared to change from boy to man
With Marilyn was colder
left dried up tears on my cold shoulder
laying loveless on demand
still I didn't understand
Close my eyes and count to ten
The times I wanted back again
The things I'd change the next time round
I was the only common ground
With Judy I was older
None the wiser but much bolder
Found a lover, lost a friend
Found the means but lost the end
With you I found the friend
to lead me on to make amends
Love alone the guiding light
Seize the days and share the nights
Close my eyes and count to ten
Those times will not come back again
Give thanks to you as love grows old
Give thanks I came in from the cold

The sea
04:03
|
|||
Run me down to the sea
Run me down
Set me free
I've been telling tales without the story
Setting sail without the wind
Look around me all I see is fear
Yesterday has more to say
Tomorrow still a day away
Will someone come and get me out of here
Run me down to the sea
Run me down
Set me free
I've been telling tales without the story
Setting sail without the wind
Look around me all I see is fear
Yesterday has more to say
Tomorrow's just a day away
Will someone come and get me out of here
End this day
washed away
End this day
salty spray
Run with me
Set Me Free

High and low
03:27
|
|||
Even on the warmest days
The thunderclouds can form
While eagles circle out of sight
And we believe we’re safe and warm
Even in the highest high
The only way is down
Wonderment replaced by doubt
Where once a smiling face
There's a frown
Suns and moons will rise each day
As heavens re-arrange
Sons and daughters likewise play
With permanence and change
Even in the lowest low
The only way is up
To see the distant light above
The promise of the half-filled cup
The tide will turn its back on me
Yet surely will return
Until the day the sandman calls
To take away all I have learned
So while your ship sails far from shore
Look for the calmer ports
I’ll be walking just behind
The wish is father to the thought

Ice cream Sundays
04:03
|
|||
Hands up in the classroom for some Sunday School religion
Teacher smiling kindly quoting parables of wisdom
God is speaking through him of an otherworldy kingdom
And everything that's wrong down here is righted by his system
Hands up in the supermarket bargain basement prizes
Chemicals and sugar coating fancy dress disguises
Instant answers on the shelf to fit a range of sizes
The retail gurus mark us down with money off surprises
Give the poor contempt
and envy to the rich
Bow to priests and charlatans
and burn the bloody witch
Buy your way to heaven
using credit card receipts
Walk the other way past
the scum under your feet
Hands upon the moneybags and fingers in the pie
The users and the usurers escape the hue and cry
While cities sleep the city keeps a baleful open eye
on short-term opportunities too juicy to pass by
Hands up for the lawman and the organ grinder's monkey
The judges free the guilty and the innocents go hungry
While children look in vain for Jesus' picture perfect country
The bitter pill is swallowed with a month of Ice Cream Sundays
Let the world go by
day by unjust day
It's only human nature
to keep it all this way
Call yourself unworthy
Worth no more than a thief
Call yourself believer
in a life without belief
